![]() ![]() Your service book should have a record of the last oil change, and when to change it again. The first thing to realize is that transmission oil is changed at set intervals. You take a look at the following video guide and see just how much work and skill go into changing the oil. ![]() You might assume that changing the transmission oil is no different from changing engine oil – but it’s an entirely different beast. However, some repairs are just beyond a DIY job. The way I see it, you’re learning a new skill and equipping your garage with new tools by just using the money you’d give to a mechanic. If you’ve read my other guides on Vehicle Freak, you know I’m all for DIY repairs. Stop the parts from moving as soon as possible. Transmission oil is somewhat cooled by the airflow beneath the vehicle, but that’s not enough. This rule isn’t up for debate and has no exceptions. Like I said in the article covering the engine oil light (you can find it here) whenever you see a warning light with the word oil in it, immediately pull over and turn off the engine. What To Do When AT Oil Temp Light Flashes? It’s designed to operate in set conditions of an enclosed environment. It’s good to know all of this, but if you want to take only one fact out of it – the transmission is a power converter, not a power generator. The highest gears, called overdrive, spin faster than the engine, allowing the car to reach greater top speeds. They convert several revolutions of the engine into a single revolution of the wheels. This means that without a transmission, the car would constantly be in fourth gear, which would make it incredibly difficult, if not impossible to get moving. The direct drive or 1:1 gear ratio happens when the transmission is in the fourth gear. The engine spins the crankshaft at different speeds but always delivers the same amount of power. The clutch connects the engine with the transmission to allow the power transfer. Simply speaking, transmission is a set of gears inside a housing. Below are some of the symptoms to look out for.The AT, or A/T oil temp light will light up and start flashing if the oil inside the transmission becomes too hot. So it’s best to know some of the symptoms that you may need a transmission fluid change. If you tend to drive fast and push your car with hard accelerations, brake hard or maybe even be pulling trailers – you’ll probably need to check your transmission fluid more frequently. The frequency of when you do need to change may also depend on how you drive your vehicle. So it is best to first check your owners manual for the specific cars recommendation. ![]() Other vehicles might recommend you to change it every 50,000 kms or 100,000 kms. Though we do recommend getting it checked at least every 100,000 kms to ensure everything is running smoothly cause sometimes moisture can get in and damage the properties of the fluid and parts. Some cars use a “lifetime” fluid – which basically means you “don’t” need to change it for the life of the transmission. When should you do a transmission fluid change?Įach vehicle has different recommendations when changing the transmission fluid. The cost of repairs, rebuilding or replacing is very expensive – compared to actually keeping your transmission properly maintained.īelow is the average price you’d expect to pay if something goes wrong with a transmission: Once the gears and part inside are worn – this may cause your transmission to slip gears and once that happens repairs will be very costly. Once that happens – the parts will scratch against each other and start to wear out and lose grip. Within the transmission there is the fluid which helps to lubricate, cool but also acts as a hydraulic fluid which help facilitate the gear shifts.Īs you use the car, step on acceleration, tow things and brake – the gears and parts inside the transmission will heat up.Īnd as it heats up, the transmission fluid will deteriorate over time – losing its properties and ability to property lubricate. ![]()
